The Problem with Conventional Trusses

Before we can explain the full benefits of SIP panel home kits, we first need to cover conventional trusses and why panelized roof systems are preferred over them. According to the Structural Insulated Panel Association, structural insulated panels (SIPs) were fielded by the Forest Products Laboratory in the 1930s. These homes were originally test homes subsidized by the federal government to test ways to use wood products in a more efficient manner to save on cost and make homes more affordable. Over time, this building practice led to panelized roof systems and the SIP panel home kits that we have today.

Getting full insulation coverage over the entire ceiling is difficult with conventional ceiling trusses. The design of conventional ceiling trusses does not allow the insulation to maintain its desired thickness all the way to the wall. This design flaw ultimately leads to a significant loss in energy and efficiency. A building code that specifies R-38 needs a full 12” space for the insulation. In addition, what is not shown here is the continuous ridge vent that allows the attic air to gently escape over time.

Compared to conventional trusses, our panelized roof systems use an energy-efficient e-SIP roof system – U.S. Dept. of Energy tests show SIP construction is 15 times more air-tight than stick framing. This is why Logangate Timber Homes offer panel home kits in our selection of pre-manufactured homes. Panel home kits are extremely energy efficient and will ultimately save you on energy costs over time!

Our e-SIP Panel is made up of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS).  We maintain a consistent R-value throughout the e-sip home panel kits and past the exterior wall, see diagram. The foam on the e-SIP panel home kit will never settle and will not hold moisture or permit mold.  We offer R-33 EPS, R-40 Neopor, and R-48 Neopor.

The neopor foam in the e-SIP home kits are formulated with graphite in the cell structure, creating a gray-hued material that provides 20% greater thermal performance than traditional EPS.
